Parenting Styles
Autocratic Parent
· Parent values authority and exercises this through strictness and control.
· Order without freedom. Child is not given choices and opportunities for exploring are limited.
· Parent tends to criticize, to correct, and to lecture. Mistakes are not acceptable.
Effect of parenting style: child follows out of fear; is afraid of making mistakes or afraid of standing up for himself/herself; may react with resentment or rebellion during later developmental stages.
Permissive Parent
· Expressed either as indulgent/over-protective (parent does everything for their child, and will pity and rescue the child from the consequences of his/her behavior) or neglectful (parent gives no limits to child).
· Freedom without order. Child is given unlimited choices with little or no guidance.
· Parent tends to be tolerant or lax, sometimes out of fear or guilt.
Effect of parenting style: child tends to grow up irresponsible, manipulative, may lack initiative since he/she is so conditioned to have someone else take care of things or may be uncomfortable with limits.
Democratic Parent
· Parent values dignity and respect, both for himself/herself and for the child.
· Freedom with order. Parent is not afraid to be firm and limit the child’s choices.
· Parent tends to guide and listen to the child, and acknowledges the learning potential that comes from making mistakes.
